New York, NY (Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024) – For immediate release:
Taglialatella Galleries is excited to announce Dreamland, the two-location exhibition by Russell Young. Set for its American debut in New York City on April 11th, followed by a focus of works on paper opening the following week in Toronto on April 17th, Dreamland is the largest and perhaps most diverse collection of works by the artist to-date.
In Dreamland, Young has expanded his canon of imagery with an array of stunning new subject matter, while continuing the thematic visual conversation around pop culture that has made the artwork of Russell Young an international sensation in galleries, art fairs and museum collections for over 25 years. Inspired by his life in California and the global fascination with the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, the artist describes Dreamland as a continuation of what he calls the “fame and shame of America.”
Growing up in Northern England, Young was drawn to the exciting and fast-paced worlds of music and entertainment in cities like London, New York and LA. He began his career working as a photographer and videographer, directing music videos and shooting fashion models and rock stars. Perhaps most notably, Young photographed George Michael for the iconic Faith album sleeve in 1987.
After moving to America and becoming inundated by a new world of visual stimulation, Young applied his photography skills to the complex practice of silkscreen printing on paper, canvas and linen. Young’s work evolved quickly as he became the first artist to harness the “diamond dust” application as a primary medium – a process originally invented by the legendary Andy Warhol in the 1980’s. This new look catapulted Young to the top of an erupting 90’s art scene, as he became known for his eye-catching contemporary style of painting with a luxurious yet raw aesthetic. Fame and shame.
Today, Russell Young is a house-hold name in pop art, blending beauty and edge with a bold selection of muses painted in his signature style of acrylic and enamel silkscreen, finished by glimmering diamond dust. With Dreamland, Russell Young brings life and electricity befitting for the likes of Elvis, Jagger, Kate Moss, The Beatles and more.
