About Russell Young | @bankrobbercalifornia
Growing up in Northern England, Young was drawn to the exciting and fast-paced worlds of music and entertainment in cities like London, New York and LA. He began his career working as a photographer and visual artist, directing music videos and shooting fashion models and rock stars including Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. Perhaps most notably, Young photographed George Michael for the iconic Faith album sleeve in 1987.
After moving to America at the turn of the century, and becoming inundated by a new world of visual stimulation, Young applied his photography skills to the complex practice of silkscreen printing on paper, canvas and linen. Young’s work evolved quickly as he became the first artist to harness the “diamond dust” application as a primary medium – a process originally invented by the legendary Andy Warhol in the 1980’s. This new look catapulted Young to the top of an erupting art scene in the 2000’s, as he became known for his eye-catching contemporary style of painting with a luxurious yet raw aesthetic. Fame and shame.
Today, Russell Young is a house-hold name in pop art, exhibiting at museums and sold in galleries around the world, as well as major auction houses such as Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Phillips. Young’s long list of collectors includes the Obamas, Brad Pitt, Floyd Mayweather, Pelé, Mark Zuckerberg, the Kardashians and more. With Jeter, Russell Young immortalized another legend in his canon of iconography from the lens of Americana and popular culture. This time, with motion. From the anticipation and excitement of a home run launched off a bat with “The Swing”, to a mesmerizing throw from deep on the left-side of the infield, whipping the ball across the diamond from mid-air in “The Jump”. The moments are alive and magical, and Jeter will remain so for years to come.
